Report: Effects of organic pollutants in the Wadden Sea ecosystem — Federal Environment Agency Research Report 102 04 440. (1997)»
Description
A number of observations can be made in the Wadden Sea in Lower Saxony, suggesting a strong anthropogenic burden on the ecosystem: Concentrations of pollutants in sediment and biota which are considered ecotoxicologically problematic; severe declining stock of the mussel; Tributyltin-caused sexual changes in snails; Years with very high spring blooms of the smallest flagellate Phaeocystis; Years in which the Wadden Sea floor grows with large green algae coverings; extreme decline in seaweed stock. However, it is difficult to separate the consequences of extreme meteorological events from anthropogenic influences. However, the effects of extreme weather conditions show the consequences of damage to individual ecosystem components on other elements of the community in the Wadden Sea. The same should apply to anthropogenic disorders. Some causality between stress factors (meteorologically and anthropogenic) and changes in the ecosystem can be shown, for others there is no evidence. In the Wadden Sea of Lower Saxonia (Lower Saxony) there are numerous observations, which suggest a strong anthropogenic impact to the ecotoxicological relevance; considerable decrease of the standing stock of Blue mussels; alterations to the sexual organs of snails caused by Tributyltin; years with exceptional spring blooms of the nanoflagellate Phaeocystis; vegetation periods, during them, the greenalgae grow to extensive and thick layers; extreme decrease of the occurrence of Eelgrass. To some extent but it is difficult to distinguish between strong meteorological events and anthropogenic influences. The effects of extreme weather conditions are nevertheless good examples for the consequences, the damage of one component of the ecosystem causes to other elements of the Wadden Sea community. Some causalities between stress factors (meteorological as well as anthropogenic) and changes in the ecosystem can be identified, but there are also impacts without demonstrable consequences.
