Report: Macrozoobenthos: Examination “Altes Boesgatje” — Borkum (1998/2000)”
Description
‘In 1998 and 2000, benthosbiological studies were carried out in the area of the ‘Old Boesgatje’ station of Borkumer’s small railway port. The aim of the survey was to capture the existing species spectrum and to determine whether species that are particularly sensitive or worth protecting could be affected by the measures in the area of the flaps. The study area has fine to medium-sized sediments. Hard substrates such as Schill or stones are hardly available. 44 macrofaun species and 8 species of fish were found in the study area. Of these 23 species were found exclusively in the gripper samples and 15 species only in dredge catches. The organism community is dominated by vagile, typical representatives of sand soil fauna, who colonise the sediment in low individual densities. Small mussel benches are formed in the northwest and eastern areas of the examination area. With the exception of metridium senile, other sessile, epibenthic species do not exist in a single or isolated form. In their local distribution, they are essentially bound to the presence of mussel shells as attachment substrates. A particularly “sensitive” or protective soil fauna was not found. With the exception of the species associated with Mytilus edulis, with the exception of species associated with Mytilus edulis, colonisation points cannot be defined at species level or at Community level by means of cluster analysis and MDS methods, subject to the low number of samples. On the surrounding eulitoral areas, species of sandwatt fauna dominate. Slightly larger mussel benches start about 2 km northeast of the folding site. Existing seagrass stocks are still further away in the south-east direction. Against the background of the currently low folding volumes and on the condition that the dredging material is low with pollutants, a greater impoverishment of the local soil fauna with future use of the folding site is not assumed.”
