Report: Zostera (seagras): Lower Saxony (2000-2002)’
Description
‘The total number of seaweeds in the Eulitoral of the Lower Saxony coast seems to have stabilised at a low level after a low level in 1993/94, and that of the dwarf seaweed Zostera noltii even slightly recovered. In the course of this year’s survey, 7.47 km² zostera stock was measured during mappings, excluding the dog/paapsand in the Ems estuary. Additional flight observations, partly secured on site, result in an up-to-date seagrass deposit with a total area of 11.04 km². In 1993/94 Kastler & Michaelis (1997) determined a total stock of 6.98 km² for the same area. The Zostera marina stock on the dog/paapsand is estimated to be about 1.38 km² in addition. Regional increases in Zostera noltii populations mainly affect the mainland belt between Norddeich and Neßmersiel, the Itzendorf plate south of Juist, the Jadebusen and the Wangerooger Watt. Losses of Zostera noltii areas are recorded according to the results of the flight on the Langlütjensand in the Weser estuary. The main area of Zostera noltii is still concentrated in Jadebusen at 5.81 km² and has grown by 2.28 km² compared to 1993/94. Zostera marina in the Wadden Sea of Lower Saxony proved to be declining: Apart from the meadow on the dog/paapsand, no closed stock was found throughout the study area, whereas in 1993/94 still 1.08 km² of pure Zostera marina and 0.58 km² of mixed stock were found on the southern edge of Borkum and in eastern Jadebusen.’
