Report: Green sand: Distribution, Ecophysiology Euglena viridis var. maritma — Lower Saxony Wadden Sea (2000-2003)»

Description

Summary “The present work explored the phenomenon of “green fields”, which has been observed since 1999 in the Wadden Sea of Lower Saxony as part of surveillance flights. This phenomenon is clearly green-colored cotton and beach sediments. The green coloration is caused by a flagellate of the genus Euglena, which is currently referred to as Euglena viridis var. maritima on the basis of morphological criteria. He colonises the sand gap system to millions. The main objective of the present studies was to gain basic knowledge of the distribution, ecology and physiology of this flagellate, in order to assess the importance of Euglena viridis var. maritima in the Wadden Sea and to what extent the mass appearance can be regarded as a warning signal from the system. In order to record the large inter-annual and seasonal distribution of Euglena, data from the flight monitoring of the years 2000 to 2003 were analysed and the seasonal stock development of 2003 was analysed in the area of the island of Norderney. In order to characterise the habitat of Euglena more precisely, one-off sediment samples were taken in summer 2003 along four transects (Norderney Beach, Memmert Beach, Watt Mellum, Watt Norderney) and three times on the Norderney beach and analysed for different sedimentological, chemical and biological parameters. Laboratory tests should additionally provide information on the tolerance of Euglena to different living conditions with regard to the parameters salinity, pH milieu and temperature. The vertical distribution of Euglena and some chemical parameters was investigated on the western beach of Norderney from July to September 2003. In addition, laboratory tests and field tests for photosynthesis and pigment composition were carried out. [...]»
