Description
“In 1998, benthosbiological investigations were carried out on behalf of the Lower Saxony Port Authority Wilhelmshaven in the area of two folding sites in Jadebusen. 116 species of macrofauna and 19 fish species were identified in the investigation area “Am Vareler Fahrwasser”, which is located in the Vareler Rinne. On the basis of the settlement conditions, the area can be divided into 3 sub-regions. [...] A comparison of the Benthos species from 1998 with the data from 1952 shows a clear impoverishment for the Vareler Rinne overall. Such impoverishment compared to 1952 was already evident in a survey in 1986 (sometimes as early as 1969). In the literature, it is explained, among other things, by the collapse of excavation material that has been carried out in this area for decades. On the other hand, there is no evidence of further impoverishment for the period 1986 to 1998. 86 macrofauna species and 10 fish species have been found in the “Am Leitdamm” area, which is located in the entrance area to the Stenkentief. [...] This study provides the basis for establishing a longer-term monitoring programme accompanying measures, provided that the folding sites will continue to be used in the future.”
