» The present work aims to clarify whether the infection with parasitic organisms is responsible for the observed decline of the mussel. [...] The current parasitic load of the mussel population of the Wadden Sea of Lower Saxony was examined over a period of 2.5 years. The status quo of the load was described as well as the development of two complete cycles of the year at selected permanent stations. The spatial variability of the distribution patterns, both on a small scale within a test station and throughout the Wadden Sea, was described. In addition, the influence of parasitic exposure on individual bivalve molluscs of different ages and on mussel populations using appropriate parameters was shown.
