Description
As part of the monitoring of Lower Saxony’s coastal waters, since 1983, on behalf of the NLÖ, the Institute of Hydrobiology and Fisheries Science of the University of Hamburg has collected mussel samples in various areas of the Wadden Sea between Ems and Elbe and analysed for heavy metals. In 1993, and in particular 1994, the scope of investigation was extended to include organic pollutants. In addition, 72 PCB congeners including the coplanar and atropisomer PCBs, which are particularly important from a toxicological point of view, were recorded in conjunction with a special measuring program for the examination of mussels for dioxins/uranins.
From an ecological point of view, the question of a possible causal link between the detected pollutant exposure of bivalve molluscs and the drastic decline in mussel stocks observed since the mid-1980s in the Wadden Sea in Lower Saxony. With regard to the use of mussels as food, the question arises as to how the pollution of bivalve molluscs should be evaluated from a nutritional toxicological point of view. An important aspect of the work is to document the extent to which sub-areas of the Wadden Sea differ with regard to their pollutant pollution and which trends can be identified after the introduction of measures to reduce pollutant inputs.
