Report: ‘Muscle: Organozinn stress; Histopathology – Lower Saxony Coast (1994)»
Description
On the East Frisian Wadden Sea coast, there has been a significant decline in the stock of mussels (Mytilus edulis) in recent years. From 1975 to 1991, the stock decreased by up to 50 % [...]. Despite strong breeding cases (1991), early evidence of the deaths of the young mussels occurred, so that the stocks could not be restored. As causes of ds observed extinction of shellfish, different possibilities are currently being discussed. Consideration is given to parasitic infestations, pollutant influences, algae bloom effects, extreme climatic conditions, overfishing and increased feeding pressure from beach crabs and seabirds.
The present study should provide an amount to clarify the causes. From a plethora of possible factors, the group of tin organyls was selected, whose accumulation in the mussels and their possible histopathological effects are focused on. [...]
170 mussels (Mytilus edulis) from the stations Norddeich, Norderneyer Watt, Dornumersiel, Spiekeroog Janssand and Gröninger Plate, Hooksiel and Jadebusen on the East Frisian coast were investigated. Of these, 80 bivalve molluscs were used for histopathological evaluation. [...]
The TBT analysis showed that the bivalve molluscs had residues in the soft body, which, compared to international studies, were in the middle range. Young mussels from Dornumersiel had the highest values. So far, there have been no signs of a positive correlation between TBT accumulation in the mussels and the observed phenomena, especially the bysus atrophies.
