Description
The waddows and gutters in the catchment area of the Otzumer Balje, the seagate between Langeoog and Spiekeroog, are the focal area of the programme “Ecosystem Research Lower Saxony Wadden Sea”. The areas bordering west and east to Norderney and Mellum are so-called “side-research areas”. As part of the preliminary phase, a documentation of all available published and unpublished Benthos investigations was prepared for this section of the Wadden Sea (Norderney to Mellum).
The results were examined, the methods critically assessed, research deficits highlighted, and recommendations for continued phases of ecosystem research as well as coastal benthos monitoring were formulated.
The macrozoobenthos of the watt areas proved to be by far the preferred group of organisms, about whose spatial and temporal distribution extensive knowledge is available. However, there is a considerable lack of data and knowledge regarding sublitoral macrobenthos as well as eulitoral microphytobenthos and meiozoobenthos.
The catchment area of the Otzumer Balje, a tidal inlet between the East Frisian island Langeoog and Spiekeroog, has been selected as main area of the “Wadden Sea ecosystem research programme of Lower Saxony”. Additionally, the adjacent areas as far as Norderney to the west and Mellum to the east will be included. The present report contains results of the pre-phase of the programs, in which all available studies and surveys on the benthos of the outlined area are evaluated. Microphytobenthos, macrophytobenthos, Meiozoobenthos and Macrozoobenthos are considered. Results and methods are critically discussed, the research deficits are elaborated and recommendations are given for the development of the continued programme.
