Description
Over the last few years, the Norderney Coast Research Centre has repeatedly pointed out that extensive areas with superficial dark sediments had formed in the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea. These were related to macroalgae mats and were an indication of increased anaerobic degradation processes. [...] The variability of anaerobic areas of the sediment surface was investigated for the first time in the present study. The processing took place over a period of eight months (March to October 1991) in a limited wadden area, the Norderney Island Watt. The phenomenon was captured by measuring, mapping and photographing. Samples were taken for chemical, sedimentological and biological parameters. [...]
