Report: Macrozoobenthos: Heavy metals in shellfish and bristleworms — Norderney (1991/1992)»

Description

The present work presents first results on heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn) in 8 selected species of soil fauna (Cerastoderma edule, Mytilus edulis, Macoma balthica, Nephtys Hombergii, Nephtys cirrosa, Arenicola marina, Nereis diversicolor and Scolelepis squamata). The aim of this biomonitoring study is to obtain information about the different bioavailability of the environment via concentrations of substances in organisms. The material was partly obtained in the wattage near Norderney, partly on the seaside beach of the island. In this paper we report preliminary results of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn) in 8 selected macrobenthic species (Cerastoderma edule, Mytilus edulis, Macoma balthica, Nephtys Hombergii, Nephtys cirrosa, Arenicola marina, Nereis diversicolor and Scolelepis squamata). Within the concept of biomonitoring, chemical concentration levels in organisms are considered as indicators of the bioavailable fraction of substances in the environment. Samples were partly taken in the Wadden-sea of Norderney, partly at the exposed sandy beach of the island.
