This thesis summarises the results from 1967 to 1972.
Only by carrying out chemical, biological and bacteriological studies at the same time can the degree of pollution of a water be measured sufficiently precisely. Since only chemical parameters of the Weser, Lesum and Wümme were considered in the previous report (Zietz 1975), bacteriological studies in these rivers will be reported here.
The bacteriological assessment of surface waters is of great interest because the waters are used for fish farming, bathing, water sports and drinking water. [...]
It is apparent from the bacteriological values that no continuous deterioration of water quality occurred from 1965 onwards. Rather, they changed cheaper and slightly less favourable years. A decrease in organic pollution upstream from Bremen can be expected in the coming years as soon as the plans for the expansion of the municipal sewage treatment plants of Bremen and Delmenhorst will be realised. A similar development will occur in the Lesum after a new sewage treatment plant was put into operation for Bremen-Nord at the end of 1973.
