Report: ‘Water quality: Weser, Lesum and Wümme; Part I: Chemistry (1967-1972)»

Description

This thesis summarises the results from 1967 to 1972. The strain on the Weser is first carried out by organic substances that can be degraded by aerobic microorganisms and thus take advantage of the oxygen balance of the Weser. The mean oxygen content of the Weser, Wümme and Lesum was generally good to sufficient from 1967 to 1972, except for Brake, where, in particular, in 1969 and 1971, values were often below 4 mg/l. They point to a strong organic burden here. In summer, the oxygen levels at Brake even temporarily decrease to 2 mg/l, so that the Weser no longer tolerates any further organic load and no temperature increase. Overall, however, the Weser is still able to reduce the organic dirt load to the mouth. The cargo of the Weser to phospates has decreased somewhat since 1967, as well as the total nitrogen pollution. However, the phosphate cargo of the Weser rose slightly again in 1972. With regard to ammonium ions, 1971 showed an improved state compared to 1969/1970. In 1972, however, there was again a deterioration. For Veckerhagen, Petershagen, Mittelsbüren and Brake, the values of oxygen extraction (48 h and 120 h) indicate a strong wastewater load. The salts from the potash mines at the upper reaches, the salt liquors from the cavern rinses and the sulphates from titanium dioxide and fertiliser production contribute to the inorganic load on the Weser. With industrial wastewater traces of heavy metals are often derived. The salt cargo of the Weser has been very high compared to other German rivers and has increased continuously from 1969 to 1972, especially in the last years. Measured values of heavy metals for the Weser near Bremen are reported. They give regarding the drinking water extraction from the Weser water at present. No cause for any concern. The residual ß activities only reach verifiable values in the Weser in a few cases. The water temperatures do not indicate any further stress on the Weser, Wümme and Lesum. A comparison of the Weser, Lesum and Wümme with various German rivers is made.
