Report: Sandbuckthorn pest Goldafter on East Frisian Islands (1972)
Description
In the early 1930s, the Goldafter (Euproctis chrysorrhoea L.), coming from the West Frisian Islands, entered the East Frisian Islands. The caterpillars are almost specialised in sea buckthorn as a forage plant. There are often mass occurrences that endanger the sea buckthorn stocks and also affect the bathing operation, as the hairs of the caterpillars cause skin inflammation. Various ways of combating it have been taken: Cutting and burning of the brushes, spraying with insecticides and with Thuricide, a combined chemical-bacteriological preparation. So far, only the islands from Borkum to Baltrum have been affected by the damage, while Langeoog, Spiekeroog and Wangerooge have been spared. It remains to be seen whether the pest will continue its migration to the east.
