Report: “Salt pointer vascular plants North and Baltic coast (1990)”
Description
In this thesis, the salt or chloride tolerance of important salt marsh halophytes of the German North and Baltic coasts is described using so-called pointer values. The ELLENBEG’s 3-stage scale is extended to a 6-stage scale. Each “salt number” indicates a defined chloride content range that the plant is exposed to at the site, i.e. its ecological optimum under competitive conditions. The classification was based on data from the literature, which can relate to both ecological and physiological behavior and often still have to be verified by targeted measurements. The pointer values presented here are intended to enable the plant sociologist to draw back to a “medium” chloride contamination at the site via the species inventory of various salt marsh plant societies and thus to delimit them ecologically. The Salt- (chloride) tolerance of saltmarsh halophytes in northern Germany is distinguished by special index-numbers. The 3-step-like scale of ELLENBERG (1979) is extended to a 6-step-like scale. Each so-called “salt-number” refers to clearly defined chloride ranges which the plants grow best under field conditions, their so called ecological optimum. The differentiation is the result of literature-dates on the ecological and physiological behaviour. In many cases there is still a lack of information. The index-numbers here presented enable to recognise the “medium” chloride content of the soil from the species composition of the plant community.
