Report: Macrozoobenthos: Methodological Study Weser Fatigue (1995)»

Description

In order to check the quality of the abundance values obtained during a benthos monitoring in the eulitoral of the Weser fatigue, an exemplary sampling with a large sample size (n=50) was carried out at one of the stations. The mean values and variances of six species obtained from this study were used in a formula proposed by ELLIOT (1971). The calculations show that the previous sampling practice (n=3) results in an error of 38-286 % depending on the species. An increase in the sample size to n=8 reduces the error to < 50 % for vie of the six species. Only with 11-46 incremental samples the error in these species can be pressed to 20 %. To test the quality of data from a monitoring programme on Macrozoobenthos abundance, a survey with a large number of sampling units (n=50) has been carried out at a permanent station in the Eulitoral of the Weser estuary. Arithmetic mean and variance of the abundances of six species were put into a formula proposed by ELLIOT (1971). The calculations indicate that the current sampling strategy (N=3) to estimate the abundances leads to an error of 30-286 % of the mean, depending on the species. The enhancement often the number of sampling units to n=8 reduces the error for four of the six species to 50 %. For these species the error can be forced down to 20 % with 11-46 sampling units.
