Report: ‘Muschel bench: Resettlement Norderney (1991-1992)»
Description
In the summer of 1991, a strong brooding of the mussel (Mytilus edulis) was observed on the coast of Lower Saxony.
This report documents the course of an approximately 0.3 km² resettlement in the island watt of Norderney over the period of one year. In addition to the development of bivalve molluscs, changes in the accompanying fauna and sediment were also observed.
The initially obviously good conditions allowed steady growth and the typical construction of a silt layer from the time of the first sampling in July 1991 to September of the same year. During the subsequent winter break, strong winds and ice aisle affect settlement structure and abundance. For the remaining animals, the conditions on the now almost muddy-free sediment have apparently deteriorated to such an extent that in the following period there is only a steady decline. In July 1992, there are only sparse remains, which have also disappeared by the end of the year.
During the summer 1991 an intense spat fall of blue mussels happened along the Lower Saxonian coast. This paper describes the development of a new mussel bed in the tidal flats of Norderney that covered an area of approximately 0.3 km². Changes of correlated fauna and sediment were also investigated. The first sampling took place in July 1991. Until September circumstances were obviously very good to allow a constant growth of mussels, correlated with the typical increase of a silt layer. During the following months the development stagnated and strong wind and floating ice had a disastrous impact on the structure and abundances of the mussel bed. The silt layer had almost disappeared and a continuous decline of mustels was registered. In July 1992 only few mustels were left and were finally lost completely by the end of the year.
