Report: “Shell stocks of Lower Saxony Wadden (1994)”

As part of the monitoring of coastal waters of Lower Saxony, mussels have been extracted from mussels two to three times a year on behalf of the Coast Research Centre for years and have been examined for heavy metals and chlorinated hydrocarbons. In this report, the results of the 1994 study carried out by the Institute of Hydrobiology and Fisheries Science at the University of Hamburg are compiled. One focus of the studies was the study of the bivalve molluscs on a wide range of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), including all coplanar congeners with dioxin-like potential, as well as polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD and PCDF). Compared to data from other sea areas with known heavy metal, PCB, PCDD and PCDF entries, all samples are in a range of moderately elevated values. In terms of their overall tendency, the heavy metal data fit into the trend of decreasing metal pollution previously described for Lower Saxony’s coastal waters. The total load expressed in TCDD equivalents with PCB, PCDD and PCDF shall be assumed with a little 5-10 pg of TEQ/g fresh weight. As a component of the monitoring programme of the State of Lower Saxony, since several years, samples of blue mussels are taken two to three times a year. They are analysed for a number of heavy metals and organochlorines. In this report, a compilation is given of results obtained in 1994. Special attention is given to a broad spectrum of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) including all coplanar congeners with a dioxin like mode of action, and to dibenzodioxins and dibenzoforans (PCDD and PCDF). Heavy metals, PCB, PCDD and PCDF are in a range of moderately elevated concentrations. Metals fit into the general trend of concentrations decreasing along the coast. For the total of PCB, PCDD and PCDF, TCDD-equivalents of about 5-10 TEQ/g fresh weight were calculated.
