Description
From 1989 to 1991, an inventory of the mussel banks on the coast of Lower Saxony was carried out. The quantitative survey was based on aircraft exploration, aerial image analysis, comprehensive ground truth investigations and sampling of 30 selected mussel benches. 137 mussel benches with a total area of 27 sq km were found in the area. Compared to a 1975 study, there has been a 50 % decline in stocks. The low biomass levels in the remaining banks also indicated that the stock was in poor condition. The total biomass in the region under investigation was 47000 tonnes of fresh weight. The reasons for the decline in mussel stocks still need to be analysed.
