Report: Macrozoobenthos: The Lower Saxon Coast (1976)»

Description

The industrial development of the Lower Saxon coastal area, in particular the estuaries of Ems, Jade, Weser and Elbe, has been a constant concern for about 10 years. [...] In order to be able to estimate the distribution and whereabouts of pollutants and their impact on the living conditions of the coastal promontory, stocktakings of communities and their ecological conditions have become an urgent necessity. These works, which are little noticed by the general public or have remained unknown to them, have in recent years provided considerable insight into the biological-ecological conditions of the coastal area and can serve as a basis for assessing changes in environmental conditions. [...] In the coastal region of Lower Saxony, the number of existing chemical and biological studies, which can be used in comparative work, is not insignificant. Even if they were originally created under other questions and some of them long ago, they still have their current value in the sense of the problems dealt with here. For this reason and to make the extensive basic material developed in decades more accessible, the authors, well-known published and unpublished works are compiled here (until the end of 1975). [...] For better illustration, the areas covered by each coastal area survey have been mapped for this purpose into the following thematic groups (sheet 1: Chemical studies of water and soil, sheet 2: Phytoplankton (single-cell plant plankton) and zooplankton (single and multicellular animal plankton), leaf, 3: Soil-living microflora (mainly diatoms and aquatic Piise) and macroflora (macroscopic algae, sea grasses, pioneer plants). Bacteria and pathogenic germs in water and sediment, leaf 4: Soil-living micro- and meiofauna; different groups of single and multicellular animals, leaf 5: Soil Malcrofauna, leaf 6: Grew up of artificial hard floors. The maps show the spatial focus of the previous investigations and at the same time provide information about spatial gaps. Each area of investigation shall bear a reference to the author and the year of publication or closure of an unpublished report. [...] The overview shows that the activities so far have focused the most on the estuaries. From a thematic point of view, the processing of macroscopic soil fauna accounted for the largest proportion, which in turn accounts for the vast majority; Part on studies in the tidal area of the Wadden Sea. The most serious gap is probably the lack of data and knowledge of soil chemistry, soil bacteriology, plankton as well as micro and meiofauna of soil. This compilation of biological and chemical studies of the Lower Saxony coastal area must therefore not hide the fact that, despite rich basic material and significant progress, a complete overview of the litoral ecosystems is not yet available and, in particular, the understanding of their substance budgets is still incomplete.
