Report: Macrozoobenthos: East Frisland (1955)»
Description
“Biological wattage mapping” means the mapping of habitats on the wadding areas falling in low water and populated by certain communities. [...]. The biological mapping of the Wadden East Frislands from Juist to Spiekeroog, carried out in 1950-1954 by the Norderney Research Centre of the North Water and Shipping Office (East Friesland), mainly pursued practical objectives with regard to the planning and implementation of hydraulic engineering measures for the protection and conservation of the coast and the offshore islands. As expressed in the work reports (KRAUSE 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954), this method succeeded. To provide information on land relocations in those wadding regions which, as a result of their altitude, could cause considerable difficulties to other hydrographic methods, such as the routinely carried out bearings. On the other hand, and this point is, in my opinion, the much more important one! — the biological cotton mapping proved to be suitable for a sufficiently precise marking of the cotton floors, which can at any time become a building ground. Finally, the biological cotton mapping, through the associated studies, allows us to gain an extension of our knowledge of faunistic, physiological and ecological issues, which goes beyond practical objectives, but related to this related knowledge. [...] It could not be the purpose of this transcript to simply summarise the particular findings contained in the above-mentioned work reports. Rather, the methodological, biological, soil and engineering geological foundations of biological cotton mapping, which could at best be briefly indicated in the reports, should be presented in such detail that at a later stage the biologist and the hydraulic engineer will be provided with advice on the implementation and evaluation of this method.’
