Report: ‘Emergency area’: Schill Investigations — Final Report (1952)»
Description
The following hiking trails for soil materials in the Emsündungsgebiet can be developed from the Schill distribution in the Emsündungsgebiet: The material brought about by the free sea penetrates in an unequal manner into the Old Ems and the Randzel Gat, with the greater quantity being transported by the latter, on its southwest side. The smaller part is transported on the northeast side of the Old Ems coast. In addition, further marine material reaches the Alte Ems via the southeast part of the seagullsteert, — Duke Gat and Emshörn’s water are also unequally supplied with marine material. The main part of this takes its way through the Emshörn waterway and enters the East Frisian Gatje, while the smaller part transported in the Old Ems penetrates the Duke Gat into the bay of Watum. Preferred transport sites cannot be indicated in these gutters as a result of the rapid decrease in sea-rail quantities. From the adjoining wattiles and from the dollart, the soil materials are for the most part transported to the bay of Watum, Duke Gat and the Alte Ems seawards and finally reach the Wester Ems and Hubert Gat. The smaller proportion is transported in the East Frisian Gatje, in Emshörn Fahrwasser and in the Randzel Gat. The sea shift seems to take place on the west side in the bay of Watum and in East Frisian Gatje, but this presumption requires further evidence by other methods. Much more well-founded indications about the transport sides of the cotton material can only be given in the area outside the island chain, in the Wester Ems the mass of the spilled cotton material on the north side, the smaller part in the Hubert Gat on the south side, is transported to the west. This side of the Hubert Gats, supplied only to a minor extent by the Ems, also receives a supply of soil material from the neighbouring Dutch cotton regions.
