Report: “Zostera (seagras) Lower Saxony (1997)”

Description

After the disappearance of sublitoral seagrass meadows at the beginning of the 1930s, since the 1970s, also in the tide area of the Lower Saxony coast Seaweed Zostera noltii and Zostera marina of drastic declines affected. The extent of the Losses were incurred in 1993 and 1994 (supplements 1995) with a comprehensive mapping of the entire the Lower Saxon mudflats are documented. In comparison with previous stock surveys have been carried out by the former extensive seaweed deposits only residual stocks preserved. Since 1970, the total area has reduced from about 35 km² to about 8 km². The Main deposits are concentrated with 3.5 km² in the The jadebush. Especially on the coasts of East Frisia and Butjadingens and on the mudflats between Weser and Elbes were lost large-scale seagrass meadows, during the jadebuses and the polyhaline areas of Weser and Emsmündung are less affected. The Remaining stocks, in particular the Zostera marina Occurrences are predominantly very thinned out. About the causes of seagrass death still exist Ambiguity. Signs of damage to sprouts and Foliage was only occasionally observed. Some Seagrass meadows are strong with macrophytic green algae overgrown. A damage gradient can be along the coast of relatively intact stocks in Denmark and North Frisia on heavy losses in Lower Saxony up to almost complete loss in the the Dutch Wadden Sea. This Distribution patterns indicate influences caused by nutrient and Pollutant inputs. The seagrass may die as A signal of serious environmental degradation in the the Wadden Sea of Lower Saxony.
