Report: Macrozoobenthos: Knechtsand – Comparison of Methods (1963)»
Description
In July and October 1963, the Norderney Research Centre, in cooperation with the
Geological Institute of the University of Kiel and the Senckenberg Institute for Marine Geology and Biology, Wilhelmshaven, conducted an investigation with the aim of testing the suitability of the luminophoric method to detect the transport of materials on the watt and to obtain knowledge about the material migration on the slave sand with this and other comparative methods. For this purpose, a
Experimental field paved at a distance of 100 m and referred to as stations 1-811. At these stations, the
Height changes measured, as well as 545 grain analyses and as many water content and annealing loss determinations
carried out. The fauna and flora have been studied, which
Currents, flow directions and water level heights measured on the watt and in the Robinsbalje, as well as around 300 water samples for sinking substances, luminophores, salinity and temperature, The weather data was provided by the weather station Cuxhaven. (Northerney Research Centre). Furthermore, the transport of materials to surface marks and on the basis of microstructure studies and pit samples was studied both from the watt and from the Robinsbalje and the Nordergrund. (Senckenberg Institute, Wilhelmshaven). In order to test the luminophore method and to obtain results, 180 kg of yellow and 120 kg red marked sand on the watt and 300 kg of yellow and red sand in the Robinsbalje were issued. On the watt, sediment samples were taken in 1885 and 72 soil grab samples were taken in Robinsbalje and examined for luminophores. (Geological Institute of Kiel University). The luminophore method is suitable for the study of material transport on the sand watt, it cannot be used in mixed and sludge watts. With this and the other comparative methods, a transport of materials across the slave sand, across the wadden water sheath, could be determined. Quantity information about the transported material is not possible, but the distances travelled can be proven.
