Report: Epifauna Teredo Investigation Station Norderney (1952)
Description
“Since 1952, a number of native wood species and various wood preservatives have been investigated by the working group “Fighting the Borrowing Shell” of the Coastal Committee of the North and Baltic Seas as part of a large-scale test for their resistance to the infestation and drilling activity of Teredo navalis L. and Limnoria lignorum Rathke. An examination station – next to those in Wilhelmshaven, Cuxhaven, List on Sylt and Holtenau – was established in Norderney.
Since in recent years the woods extracted from the water have always been examined only for traces of infestation of the aforementioned species, it seemed time to examine the epifauna of the experimental plant and its possible dependence on various wood preservatives.
The woods examined were in the water from 5.12.1955 to 17.9.1956. The attempt to be discussed ran during this period; the woods themselves have been in the water since 1952.
