Report: Macrozoobenthos: Juist Watt and Norderney Watt (1951)»

Description

The work of the previous year, which is set out in the report of the Research Centre for 1950, has clearly demonstrated that mapping the habitats of the cotton soil, which is dry at low water, is as accurate as possible, or that changes in the position of the superficial sediment layers are still suitable. Getting to know these changes in the situation is likely to be essential for hydraulic planning. The external works consisted of planned ascents of the mudflats, whereby the boundary points of the clashing living communities by means of sextants were measured and later recorded cartographically. In individual cases, exact counts of the animal population were carried out in the site, in some cases also in the laboratory. [...] As the evaluation of the biological mapping work in the western Juister Watt (see Ber. d. Research site 1950) showed, one cannot accord the large-scale wadden areas a similar behavior everywhere. Reaction units are the sub-areas according to the hydrological factors acting at sea. It will therefore not be necessary to ask how the Juister Watt behaves or behaves, but only how it behaves or behaves, for example, the Nordland or the Hamburg sand. In comparison between Juister and Norderneyer Watt, the last in its entirety is subject to minor surface changes. This is the only general finding. In addition, the sub-areas must be dealt with in each case. Already in the research report for 1950, the limits of the possibilities of biological watt mapping were pointed out. Probably in many cases, with sufficient certainty, something can be said about the nature and direction of a superficial soil change within a small area, on the other hand, in the rarest cases something about the time or the speeds at which the said change took place or still takes place. However, this is not yet a lack of the method itself, as such time-quantitative information will be possible if repeated mappings of smaller and easily limitable habitats are carried out during certain periods of time. In another point, the possibilities of statements will be increased. There is no doubt that the individual of the different watt-life communities are correlated with those soil physical and soil chemical properties which vary to some extent but can be distinguished from other habitats. If the chemical-physical works associated with general terrain mapping have been completed since 1950, it will be possible to combine the physical and chemical properties of the soil, which are of interest in hydraulic engineering, at the same time with the easily and quickly comprehensible biocönotic term (e.g. Mya-Watt). This would have in principle achieved what the plant sociological vegetation mapping has been successful for a long time and made this method an often very useful, often not too immediate, but in any case time-saving aid for the practitioner.
