“Since autumn 2006, macrozoobenthos (MZB) studies have been carried out in the transitional and coastal waters of Lower Saxony on the practical testing and standardisation of testing and evaluation procedures of this quality component in the course of the implementation of the EC WD. The previous report (Grotjahn et al., 2008) presented the methods and results of the 2006/2007 MZB investigations. The data were used to assess the ecological status of the communities, inter alia by means of the M-AMBI procedures (transitional and coastal waters; Heyer, 2008) and AETV (transitional waters; War, 2007, KRIEG, 2008) and the results discussed. The selection and representativeness of the investigation stations for the evaluation of the individual water bodies (WK) was critically considered and suggestions for the continuation of monitoring in the following investigation years were made. On the basis of these proposals, further studies were carried out in spring and autumn 2008, the results of which are the content of this report. In addition to the gripper and piercing samples, the results of the semi-quantitative dredge samples, which have been taken parallel to the gripper samples since autumn 2006, are also presented. The assessment of the ecological status of the MZB communities shows for all stations the recalculation of the M-AMBI with German reference values, which were determined on the basis of MZB investigations from the period 1960-1990 (HEYER, 2009). On the basis of the results, proposals for the continuation of the overview and operational monitoring will be made.”
