Report: “WRRL: Assessment of macrophytes and angiosperms (2009)”

» This thesis deals with the recording and evaluation of macrophytes/angiosperms (here: Röhrichte, Brack- and Salzmarschen) as part of a practical test for the implementation of the EC-WRRL in the transitional waters of Weser and Ems. The aim was to implement and test the procedures developed for the assessment of the macrophytes of the transitional waters, for the transition waters of Ems and Weser, by analysing all available and newly collected data and to adapt them to the water-specific conditions in the respective transitional waters. Based on this, an up-to-date assessment of the status of the above-mentioned quality elements was carried out for the quality component macrophytes/angiosperms in the transitional waters. As the transition waters of Weser and Ems are classified as significantly altered water bodies (HMWB), the ecological potential is also determined. Thus, the evaluation of the individual processed parameters yielded different results with regard to the classification of the ecological status or ecological potential. While individual parameters yielded good or even very good condition and good or very good ecological potential, others showed poor ecological status or poor ecological potential. Overall, the Weser and Ems transitional waters show a moderate ecological status or moderate ecological potential. The parameter “types and structure of the pioneer zone or the reed light belt” did not flow into the overall assessment in the sub-areas of Ems-Estuary and Outer Weser. However, the evaluation results there for this parameter indicate that there are significant ecological deficits in the area of the pioneer zone in these water sections. Indications of further work and recommendations for the implementation of future monitoring will be provided.”
