Description
“Since 1982, sediment studies have been carried out by the NLWKN (and its predecessor institutions) in Lower Saxony as part of the Federal/State Measuring Programme for the North and Baltic Seas (BLMP). The EC Directive 2008/105/EC lists the three heavy metals cadmium, mercury and lead among the priority substances with particular attention to the trend determination. The available Lower Saxony sediment data have already been evaluated in accordance with the requirements of the OWV, the results are presented below. In addition to the 3 heavy metals listed above, chromium, copper, nickel and zinc have been considered. The quality of coastal waters depends mainly on nutrient and pollutant inputs from land, on pollutant inputs by air, on direct shipping inputs and on the release of nutrients and pollutants from contaminated sediments. Thus, the sediments of the wattage areas are of particular importance.”
