Accumulation of pressures that may cause significant changes to the salinity regime in the Canary Islands (EM CAN PRE Salinity)
Description
In order to identify those areas in the Canary Islands where the saline regime may be significantly altered, a semi-quantitative index has been developed that takes into account all the elements described in this section. Initially, the cells that are less than 100 meters from the discharges of:
Brine.
- Urban waste water from UWWTPs.
- Industrial discharges.
- Drains from the rainwater network.
To assess the magnitude of discharges, special attention has been paid to:
- Discharges from seawater desalination plants with a capacity greater than 10,000 m3/day.
- Discharges from sewage treatment plants with a capacity greater than 100,000 inhabitants equivalent.
Once all the elements have been integrated, the index has been calculated using the following formula:
SALINITY INDEX = 0.25*[storm network discharges] +0.5*[WWTP discharges minor 100,000 Heq + industrial discharges]+0.75*[WTP discharges minor 10,000m3/day] + 1* [WTP discharges major100,000 Heq] + 1.5*[WTP discharges minor 10,000m3/day]
Finally, everything has been added, being the resulting range of values:
Very High: 3.01 to 3.25 /High: 2.51 to 3 /Medium: 1.51 to 2.5 /Low: 0.26 to 1.5 /Very Low: 0 to 0.25.
