Description
The data in this table are derived from the air emission accounts which form part of the environmental accounts that CBS compiles annually. The table contains figures on emissions of harmful substances to air in so far as they relate to Dutch economic activities (including emissions from Dutch nationals abroad, excluding emissions from non-residents in the Netherlands). Emissions of these substances are related to these activities. Emissions of substances caused by natural sources are not taken into account because the relationship with an economic activity is lacking. Emissions of pollutants and gases from both stationary sources (such as power plants) and from mobile sources (such as road traffic) are attributed to different industries and households. The pollutants that are distinguished are: Co (carbon monoxide); CO2 (carbon dioxide); CH4 (methane); N2O (nitrogen oxide, also known as nitrous oxide); NOx (nitrogen oxides, collection); SO2 (sulphur dioxide); NH3 (ammonia); PM10 (fine dust with a diameter of less than 10 micrometers); NMVOC (volatile organic compounds excluding methane CH4). Because the data in the environmental accounts are directly linked to the economic data in the national accounts, it is possible to quantify the impact of the economic performance of the Netherlands on the environment.

Status of the figures:
The figures for the last year have provisional status.
The figures from the air emission accounts are temporally comparable and consistent with the economic figures in the national accounts. However, the alignment between environmental accounts and national accounts takes place with a variety of sources. This means that although the system of calculations is the same every year, variation can occur due to changes at certain sources. For example, changes to emission factors in emission recording and adjustments in traffic and transport statistics may have an impact on the entire time series of the air emission accounts. In order to achieve consistent time series, the complete time series is (re)calculated every year, so that the latest insights are also taken into account.
Amendments as of November 2022:
Figures for 2021 have been added, figures for previous reporting years may have been adjusted in line with the revision strategy. See the status of the figures.
An additional breakdown for CO2 emissions has been added. CO2 emissions from biomass and CO2 emissions excluding biomass are available for the entire time series.
When will there be new figures?
New figures are published annually in November.
