Description
The Water Framework Directive (WFD) follows the principle that river basins must be considered and managed as a whole. However, manageable sub-units are created for practical work, e.g. for the preparation of management plans or for the inventory of the state of the lakes. Water bodies are the smallest unit considered by the WFD.
The WFD monitoring in Schleswig-Holstein refers to 73 water bodies, each with a lake area of more than 50 ha, 62 of which are natural lakes and 11 artificial lakes. With regard to these lakes, Germany is obliged to report to the EU.
