Description
The Netherlands is the only country with a special department for water management cartography. This is due to the unique structure of the Dutch landscape. The fact that about half of our country is below sea level requires special management measures. The water management cartography contributes to this with maps that provide an inventory of the water management infrastructure of the country. From about 1850 onwards, a systematic mapping of the Netherlands began. The first edition of the Waterstaatskaart van Nederland 1:50.000 was published from 1865 (Ormeling & Kraak, 1993, p.229).
In principle, five editions of the Waterstaatskaart have been published. However, the number of editions varies quite a bit per map sheet. Of some map sheets only four editions have been published, of other map sheets six or even seven. In addition, it happens that there were already three editions of certain map sheets, while the second edition of other map sheets still had to be published. The layout of the sheet has also been changed several times, on the basis of the Topographical Service.
In the description of the five editions, the separate map sheet was the starting point. This means that cards from the same year can appear in different editions.
