Red List of Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) of Austria.
Description
Of the 146 ant species living in Austria, 10.3% are classified in the CR (Critically Endangered), 13.7% in the EN (Endangered) and 19.2% in the VU (Vulnerable) category. The alert list (category NT, Near Threatened) includes 41 species (28.1%), six species (4.1%) have insufficient data (category DD, Data Deficient), 12 species (8.2%) have not been classified (category NE, Not Evaluated), 24 species (16.4%) are considered as non-hazardous (category LC, Least Concern). The analysis was based on 58 548 individual data sets, most of which had been collected in the last 30 years. There is an acute need for action for 57 species of ants in the highest risk categories. Striking is the high number of species on the pre-warning list, suggesting deteriorating living conditions for still widespread species.
