ENVI-PV: Environmental Impact Assessment Web Service for Photovoltaics Systems

Description

ENVI-PV is a web-based interactive service to assess the current and prospective (2050) environmental performance of the production, transportation and use of photovoltaic systems at screening level based on reference Photovoltaic (PV) systems. Maps of screening level PV environmental performances are provided for a worldwide coverage. These maps are based on PV Life Cycle Inventories developed by Treeze for the IEA PVPS Task 12 (Frischknecht et al., 2014; 2015). Country electricity mixes correspond to IEA statistics for the year 2008, except for the Swiss electricity, which is characterized for 2009 according to data from the Federal Office for Energy (Itten et al., 2014). The quantified environmental performance is expressed as an impact per generated kWh, according to the expected yearly electricity production of the PV systems. The yearly electricity production has been computed applying the NASA SSE algorithm to the freely available NASA SSE (Surface meteorology and Solar Energy) solar irradiation database (https://eosweb.larc.nasa.gov/sse) to get maps of multiannual average of yearly global equatorward latitude tilted irradiations corresponding to the RETScreen method (Stackhouse and Whitlock; 2014, section V.I.).
