Flooding – Flood probability of primary and regional tides (2020)
Description
Since 2019, the DPRA has recommended the new map “Place-related flood risk” for the topic of consequence reduction of floods. The map provides insight into the likelihood of a flood with a water depth > 20 cm and thus gives a better insight into flood risks than just the maximum water depth maps, which only present the ‘should’ image of the maximum water depths (the most extreme event). In this map, the flood opportunities of primary and regional warfare are combined. The “place-bound risk of flooding” will help in the theme of consequential restriction of flooding.
Primary and regional barriers protect the hinterland from flooding. The primary barriers have a standard that indicates the probability of failure per dike trajectory. Based on these standards, the flood scenarios are derived and have an overrun rate equal to or less than the standard. A frequency of overruns of 1/100 years has been assumed for regional clashes.
It may happen that certain locations in the hinterland have a chance to be hit by more than one flood scenario. When this happens, the likelihood of these specific locations being affected by a flood increases. That’s why it’s called place-bound flood chance.
