Microbiological water quality of the official beach baths

Description

The Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs checks the water quality of the official beach resorts of the canton of Freiburg every year. The water samples from the beach baths are examined according to the “Recommendations for the examination and assessment of the bath water quality of lake and river baths” of the Federal Offices for Environment and Health. According to these recommendations, water quality is divided into four classes (A to D). This division makes it possible to assess the water in terms of its hygienic safety from a bacteriological point of view. The public beach resorts are subject to the responsibility of the communities (municipalities) and are examined annually. These beaches have minimal infrastructure – showers, cabins and sanitary facilities. Depending on the analysis results, the cantonal doctor may order the closure by the operator.
