Benthic habitats of the Avilés Underwater Canyon System

Description

The information contained in this data set is the mapping of the habitats identified through the study carried out within the scope of the INTEMARES project (LIFE15 IPE ES 012) by the team working in the COST-SANTANDER (CSIC), in collaboration with the INTEMARES team of the Marine SIG group of the IEO. This is the representation of the spatial distribution of bentonic habitats of the Avilés Underwater Cannon System. The area comprising the data provided covers _a cartographic surface of about 3,390.26 km2 whose longitudinal limits are approximately 5o35' WEST - 6o40 WEST, while the latitudinal ones are approximately 43o40' N, and 44o 05', its seabed, the waters of the canyon system comprising the Avilés canyon, the Corbiro canyon and the Gaviera canyon, its tributaries, the continental shelf and the upper slope. This set of information is structured based on mathematical modeling that linked the presences or densities of the biota to the available environmental variables to obtain the prediction of habitat presence. It is a set of data composed of polygonal elements, where each element represents a different habitat with a name and its correspondence according to the national and international regulations considered. Therefore, each object is associated with a series of alphanumeric variables, which associate the entities to the different nomenclatures that correspond to them according to the regulations. The preparation of this set of geographical information began in _2021, thanks to different oceanographic campaigns listed in the corresponding report: Report on the characterisation, mapping and conservation status of the benthic habitats of the SCI- ESZZ12003 ‘Sistema de Cañones Submarinos de Avilés’ (Northern Demarcation).These can be divided into image sampling (non-invasive) and direct sampling with dredgers, drags, beam bou etc. The geographical information collected is stored in a spatial database. These works have been financed thanks to the LIFE IP INTEMARES Project (LIFE-IP INTEMARES - Integrated, Innovative and Participatory Management for N2000 network in the Marine Environment - LIFE15 IPE/ES/000012). This integrated project has the challenge of laying the foundations to effectively manage the marine areas of the Natura 2000 Network and complete the work and progress promoted within the framework of the LIFE + INDEMARES project, which managed to take a great step in terms of declaring new areas.
