Population of the Helsinki region by citizenship and sex since 31 December 1999. ##Lower ranges The Helsinki region consists of four municipalities in the Helsinki metropolitan area: Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen, and ten surrounding municipalities: Hyvinkää, Järvenpää, Kerava, Kirkkonummi, Mäntsälä, Nurmijärvi, Pornainen, Sipoo, Tuusula and Vihti. The sums in the table are the metropolitan area, the peri-urban area, the Helsinki region. In addition, the table includes the sum level Uusimaa, which covers not only the Helsinki region but also the municipalities Askola, Hanko, Inkoo, Karjalohja, Karkkila, Lapinjärvi, Lohja, Loviisa (formerly Loviisa, Pernaja, Ruotsinpyhtää and Liljendal), Myrskylä, Nummi-Pusula, Porvoo, Pulkkila, Raasepori and Siuntio. The regional division corresponds to the situation on 1 January of the statistical reference year. At the beginning of 2009, the south-western part of the municipality of Sipoo (now Östersundom area) and the so-called Västerkulla wedge area of the city of Vantaa were incorporated into Helsinki. This should be taken into account when comparing the population figures for the statistical years 2000-2008 with the figures for the statistical years 2009- concerning Helsinki, Vantaa and Sipoo, as well as the sum levels for the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and the spending limits area. The Helsinki region is a housing and labour market area. ##Target set and cropping Population means the population permanently resident in a municipality. Persons who, according to the Population Information System maintained by the Population Register Centre (VRK), are domiciled in a municipality at the turn of the year, belong to the population regardless of their nationality, as well as those Finnish citizens who live temporarily abroad. A foreign national is domiciled in a municipality if his or her stay is intended to last or has lasted at least one year. An asylum seeker will not be granted a place of residence until his or her application has been approved. Persons residing in the municipality who are members of a foreign embassy, a commercial mission or an office of a posted consul, as well as their family members and personal servants, do not belong to the municipality's population unless they are Finnish citizens. The Finnish personnel of Finnish embassies and commercial missions abroad, as well as those serving in the UN peacekeeping forces, are counted among the population of the municipality. At the turn of 1993/94, in accordance with the Population Information Act (507/93), the population at the turn of the year began to be used, replacing the previously used situation on 1 January. The difference is that the population at the turn of the year does not include those born and moved on the first day of the year. Before 1990, data on the life-written population were used. For the sake of simplicity, the tables use the situation on the first day of the year. From 1996 onwards, when compiling the population data for the first day of the year, all the previous year's change data received in the Population Information System of the Population Register Centre before the end of January (from 1990 to the end of May and from 1991 to the end of March 1995) are taken into account. ##Classifications Citizenship means being a citizen of a country. Citizenship is usually acquired at birth, but it can be changed when you move to another country to live there. A person may also be a citizen of several countries (Citizenship Act 2003/359 and Citizenship Decree 1985/699). If a person has the citizenship of two countries, one of which is Finnish, he or she is a Finnish citizen in the statistics. If a foreign citizen living in Finland has several foreign nationalities, he or she is in the register and statistics as a citizen of the country with whose passport he or she has entered the country. In the table, countries are classified into continents and further into groups of countries. If there has been no representative of citizenship in Finland since 2000, the country in question is not on the list at all. The grouping criteria can be found in a separate file. Data encryption: If there are fewer than five representatives of citizenship in the statistics, the gender is encrypted.
