Description
The province of Overijssel has mapped its oldest forests. These are forests of which most existed 400 years ago and the oldest forest has been known for 800 years (Zalkerbos). The centuries-old forests are mainly located in Twente, but also in the Vechtstreek and Northwest Overijssel. In total, there are 326 different groves and forests, with an average size of 2.6 hectares. On the total of the Overijssel forest, most of which was planted after 1880, the share is very limited (only 2.5 percent). Most are not accessible, but a number of larger forests are such as the Hoge Venterink (Oldenzaal), Hooge Holt (Gramsbergen), Gravenbosch (Saasveld) and Hassinkhof (Beuningen). The municipality of Hof van Twente has the largest number of oldest forests with 49 forests. Look for centuries-old forest in your area on the Cultural History Value Map.
