Foundation stone laying of the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal 1887
Description
The scientific interest of the doctoral student Hermann Oldach (1850-1828) was expressed not only in his studies in chemistry at Kiel University, but also in his passionate engagement with photography still in its infancy. In 1887 he documented the solemn laying of the foundation stone for the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal, now Nord-Ostsee-Kanal, in the Holtenau district of Kiel with his camera. However, the multi-day festival in front of a pompous backdrop with 1000 guests of honour and a ship parade had to be elaborately set up and prepared beforehand. This is shown by the also pictured wooden scaffolds and decorative works with floral bandages.
