Description
In 2017, around 82.3 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent were emitted in Austria. As a result, emissions were around 4.6% higher than in 1990. Compared to the previous year 2016, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions increased by 3.3%. The main reason for this is the increase in emissions in the transport sector, as well as in the energy and industrial sectors.
The non-ETS sectors emitted 51.7 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2017.
For the first time, GHG emissions were 2.1 million tonnes higher than the national emission ceiling for 2017.
Compliance with the national GHG reduction trajectory for 2013 to 2020 is nevertheless plausible, as emission allowances not yet used from previous years are available.
Consistent long-term efforts are essential for achieving the 2030 and 2050 targets.
