Designation of priority waters for fish ecological continuity in flowing waters for the Land Brandenburg
Description
The data set contains supraregional and regional priority waters for the fish-ecological continuity of Brandenburg’s flowing waters.
Within the Elbe River Basin Community (FGG) Elbe, supra-regional priority waters were initially identified in 2009, the continuity of which is vital, in particular for long distance migratory species, such as eel, sturgeon, salmon, sea trout, sea and river Neunauge, North Sea Schnäpel or Mayfish. The state of Brandenburg initially accounted for six waters. For the Oder area, however, such a supra-regional designation was not carried out at that time.
The selection and definition of additional regional priority waters for ecological continuity was subsequently carried out by the Brandenburg Environment Agency and was validated and supplemented by the Institute for Inland Fisheries (IfB) in particular with fish ecological requirements (2010) and subsequently published as a GIS dataset. Based on current fishing results regarding the occurrence of rheophilic species (Döbel, Hasel, Nine Eyes), this list has been extended by the IfB as part of Part IV of the Land Concept (2020). In the case of high fish volume or high number of species, the corresponding waters were added to the priority water list and database. These additions also made it necessary to update the digital GIS dataset of Brandenburg’s priority waters.
