Agriculture; holdings with widening activities, main type of holding, region
Description
This table provides data on the number of agricultural holdings with widening activities and the share of the widening in the total gross yield of the holding, broken down by main type of holding and region.
The data for this table are taken from the agricultural census. The agricultural census is part of the combined task, which is used, among other things, for the implementation of the agricultural policy and enforcement of the Fertilizers Act.
Widening data refer to the period from April to March preceding the agricultural census.
The widening figures based on the Agricultural Census can give an incomplete picture, among other things because more and more entrepreneurs split their businesses (due to legislation, tax benefits, or risk spreading, for example) into several independent companies with their own legal form and accounting. These companies may not come into the picture via the Agricultural Census.
As of 2010, a new standard for the economic size of companies and a new type of company will be applied. Until 2009, the economic size of agricultural holdings was expressed in NGE (Dutch Size Unit). As of 2010, this has been replaced by SO (Standard Yield). As a result, the lower limit for inclusion of holdings in the publication of the Agricultural Census changes from 3 nge to 3000 euro SO. SO standards are updated every three years. The most recent update took place in 2020.
For comparability over time, data from 2000 to 2009 have been recalculated on the basis of SO standards and classifications; The 2010 SO standards were used in this recalculation.
From 2016 onwards, information from the Trade Register will be used for the demarcation of the Agricultural Census. Registration in the Commercial Register with an agricultural SBI (Standard Business Classification) is leading in determining whether there is an agricultural holding. This demarcation is as close as possible to the statistical regulations of Eurostat and the (Dutch) implementation of the concept of 'active farmer' from the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
The demarcation of the Agricultural Census based on information from the Trade Register mainly affects the total number of holdings, a clear trend break occurs here. Given the size and type of holdings excluded by the new demarcation (such as riding schools, petting zoos and nature management organisations), the impact on the widening figures is limited.

When will there be new figures?
Questions about widening are not included in the Agricultural Census every year. In the years that are requested for widening, the provisional figures will appear in December and in March of the following year the final figures will follow.
