Volume 5 of the publication series ‘Fortschritte in der Geologie von Rheinland und Westfalen’ (Progress in the Geology of Rhineland and Westphalia) implements the announcement made in the preface to Volumes 1 and 2 that it will also deal with sub-areas and sub-problems as soon as they have become ripe for a summary presentation. Due to the rich and revolutionary development of their species in the Devonian era, a large genus of armored fish has proven to be a useful element for the biostratigraphic structure of the Rhenish Lower Devonian. In its paleontological foundation and synopsis, as well as in its stratigraphic application, this volume represents a symposium in which the author has summarized the results of his own and other works.
