Description
The "Niedersächsische Elbtalaue" biosphere reserve is part of the UNESCO
In 1997, the Elbe River Landscape was recognised as a trans-national biosphere reserve. It was established by the Law on the Lower Saxon Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve on 23 November 2002 with a total area of 56,760 hectares.
The ‘Niedersächsische Elbtalaue’ biosphere reserve extends 100 kilometres southeast of Hamburg along the Elbe between Schnackenburg in the east and Hohnstorf (Elbe) in the west (electricity kilometre 472.5 near Schnackenburg to 569 near Lauenburg). The biosphere reserve includes parts of the districts of Lüchow-Dannenberg and
Lüneburg.
