Description
RIS or River Information Services is a package of various services designed to optimise the traffic and transport process in inland waterway transport. RIS streamlines the exchange of information between the managers and users of the waterways and aims to contribute to a safe and efficient transport process. The European RIS Directive (2005/44/EC - OJ L 255,30.09.2005) applies to all waterways of class IV or higher and obliges waterway managers to provide a number of inland waterway information services, such as the production of Inland ECDIS maps, tracking & tracing, electronic data exchange and messages to the boatmaster.The RIS index is an important set of reference data used by different RIS applications. These reference data relate to objects on and along the waterway (works of art, quays, bollards, jetties, etc.) and waterway sections (confluences, hectometer points, etc.). This data makes it possible to determine information for waterway users as precisely as possible. The format in which the data must be made available has been developed within the European expert groups and imposed as a standard.
