Description
In 2016, some 79.7 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent were emitted in Austria. As a result, emissions were around 1.2% higher than in 1990. Compared to 2015, GHG emissions increased by 1.0%. The main reason for this is the increase in emissions in the transport and buildings sectors. The non-ETS sectors emitted 50.6 million tonnes in 2016. GHG emissions were thus 0.4 million tonnes below the national emission ceiling for 2016. According to scenario analyses by the Federal Environment Agency, the national target for GHG reduction by 2020 can be achieved through additional measures, especially in transport and room heating. Consistent long-term efforts are essential for achieving the 2030 and 2050 targets.
