Accumulation of pressures that can cause the alteration of hydrodynamic conditions and / or the modification of sedimentation in the Strait and Alboran Demarcation (EM ESAL PRE Modification Sedimentation)
Description
For the identification of areas that may undergo hydrographic alterations and, in many cases, modification of sedimentation, the following human activities and pressures have been considered:
- Port and defence infrastructure.
- Retention of river flow in reservoirs and other regulatory infrastructure.
- Extraction of solids: exploitation of underwater deposits and port dredging.
- Artificial reefs and controlled sinking of wrecks.
- Dumping of dredged port material.
- Regeneration of beaches and creation of artificial beaches.
- Mussel-growing bats.
The analysis has been carried out through a semi-quantitative index, which takes into account the presence or proximity of elements that can cause this type of impact. The selection of the cells for each of the pressures has been made according to the following criteria:
- Those containing an authorised place of dumping of dredged material.
- Those that contain some sand extraction point.
- Those that are less than 500 m from an artificial or regenerated beach.
Those that are less than 100 m from some stretch of artificial coast.
Those that are less than 500 m from a port.
Those containing a shipwreck.
Those that contain some artificial reef.
- The ones that contain some batea (although in the case of this Demarcation the spatial location of the batea polygons is not available).
Those that are less than 2 km from the mouth of an altered river.
- Those containing a heavily modified body of water declared under the WFD.
- Those that are less than 100 m from some stretch of eroded coast.
The following formula has then been applied:
MODIFICATION OF SEDIMENTATION= 0,1*[sunken vessel + artificial reef] + 0,25*[dragged material + sand extraction + artificial or regenerated beaches + baths] + 0,5*[artificial coast + ports + rivers with hydrological alteration] + 1*[highly modified water mass in application of WFD + eroded coast]
Cells are classified based on the following ranges:
Very High: 3 to 4 / High: 2.2 to 3 / Medium: 1.5 to 2.2 / Low: 0.5 to 1.5 / Very Low: less than 0.5
