EasyGSH-DB: Shell potential map (2012)
Description
Both the settlement and survival of bivalve molluscs is linked to various influencing factors, so-called environmental parameters, which prevent the survival of bivalve molluscs outside certain borders, while promoting a habitat within the borders.
Overall, only vague to no numerical values can be recorded in the literature regarding any influencing factors, especially in terms of their orders of magnitude. In order to be able to assign individual potentials to the various environmental parameters in the form of numerical values between zero and one, based on the determined minimum, maximum and median values, affiliation functions (combination of sin and cos functions as well as exponential functions) are created. These affiliation functions can be used to identify individual potentials associated with each value of an environmental parameter, which are summarised by the use of the geometric mean to an overall potential for each point within the study area and valid for the year of study. This results in a potential map for mussel societies, in which the read value is to be understood as a characteristic for favourable/unfavourable overall environmental conditions.
